Assam Forest Drive Cracks Down on Illegal Fishing in Kaliabor
The Forest Department carried out an enforcement drive in Kaliabor, Assam, after receiving reports that people were fishing in violation of a seasonal ban intended to protect breeding fish. The operation targeted a channel of the Brahmaputra River at No. 2 Bhurbandha, where officers found suspected illegal activity and seized fishing gear.
The fishing prohibition was issued earlier by the District Magistrate and applies to water bodies from April 1 to July 15. The order covers several species-Rohu, Pithia, Bahu, Kuri, Mali, Chital and Khoria-to allow natural breeding and replenishment of fish stocks as part of broader aquatic biodiversity conservation measures.
Despite the restrictions, local reports indicated some individuals continued fishing during the closed season. In response, the Silghat Forest Range Office launched the on-site operation to curb these violations and enforce the magistrate’s directive.
Forest Department personnel confiscated nets and other equipment alleged to have been used for illegal fishing. Officials said enforcement drives would continue to ensure compliance with the seasonal restrictions and to safeguard fish populations during the critical breeding period.
The action underscores ongoing efforts by authorities to uphold conservation rules designed to protect riverine fish and support long-term sustainability of local fisheries.
