Alert: Assam Police Recover Two Pistols Near Dibrugarh Railway Tracks
Two pistols were recovered beside the railway track at Banipur, close to Dibrugarh Railway Station, on Sunday morning after passersby spotted the firearms and alerted authorities, prompting a security response and the seizure of the weapons for forensic examination.
“We received information about suspicious objects near the tracks and immediately rushed a team to the spot. On inspection, we found two pistols, one concealed in a polythene packet and the other lying exposed,” said a Railway Protection Force (RPF) official.
One pistol was tightly wrapped in black polythene while the other lay in the open beside the rails. Passersby who discovered the items raised the alarm, after which railway and local police units were notified.
Officials suspect the weapons may have been deliberately abandoned by unidentified persons, possibly to avoid detection while moving through the railway station area. “It is suspected that someone may have dumped these weapons in haste, fearing a security check. We are examining all angles, including the possibility that these arms were being smuggled through the rail route,” the official added.
A joint team of personnel from the RPF, Government Railway Police (GRP) and Assam Police reached the site soon after the recovery and seized both pistols for further examination. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to trace the origin of the firearms and identify those responsible.
