Zubeen Garg Death Case Day 5: Garima’s Crucial PSOs Testimony
The fifth day of witness examination in the fast-track court trial into the death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg continued in Guwahati on June 12, with eight witnesses scheduled to depose as the expedited hearing progresses. The proceedings form part of a probe into circumstances surrounding the singer’s death and related allegations that have drawn significant public attention.
Among those who appeared was complainant Pankaj Bora of Gohpur, who said before entering the courtroom that he had filed an FIR at Gohpur Police Station on September 22, three days after Garg’s death on September 19. “I had filed an FIR in Gohpur Police Station on September 22 after the death of Zubeen Garg on September 19. We had mentioned Siddharth Sarma and Shyamkanu Mahanta as conspirators. We demanded a proper probe into the matter and today we are called for witness trial,” Bora told reporters.
Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, spoke to the media during the day, commenting on bail petitions by two former personal security officers (PSOs) who were arrested by the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell in a disproportionate assets case. She said the two PSOs had accompanied her in the days after the accident and death and that she had not been informed of any relevant information by them. “At first, we were not aware of anything. The two even accompanied me days after the accident and death of Zubeen. If they wanted to come out and be truthful, they could have told me, but they did not,” she said.
Garima alleged that several financial transactions tied to Garg’s professional work were routed through the PSOs, including cash payments and UPI transfers to the PSOs’ accounts. “All the money for Zubeen’s recording is sometimes directly given to him by cash or to the PSOs. Even the UPI transfers for his work were made to the PSOs’ accounts. When the SIT conducted a detailed investigation, all these details,” she alleged. Earlier this year, the CM’s Vigilance Cell filed chargesheets against former PSOs Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, accusing them of possessing assets disproportionate to known income.
Expressing faith in the legal process, Garima said the family would seek justice through established judicial mechanisms. “We are ordinary people, and have no option other than faith in the system. We cannot take justice into our own hands. As citizens of this country, we want justice to be delivered through due legal procedures,” she stated.
On the Singapore yacht incident, Garima reiterated that everyone present aboard the yacht remains an accused in the family’s view and that it is for the courts to determine how those in Singapore are brought into the witness process. She also defended her late husband’s legacy in a recent social media post, questioning claims that he was habitually intoxicated and pointing to his body of work: “If he had spent his entire life under the influence of alcohol, how could he have recorded 40,000 songs in just 52 years? He was not only a singer but was also a writer, composer, filmmaker, environmental advocate, social worker and poet.”
Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar told the court that the defence had failed to substantially weaken prosecution witnesses during cross-examination. The fast-track court continued with witness examination as part of the expedited trial process.
