Manipur Clashes: Naga Civilian’s Killing Sparks Fresh Violence
Reported by Bit Irom
Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s hill districts after the killing of a Rongmei Naga civilian, culminating in a gunfight along the Imphal–Tamenglong (IT) Road on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, that left a suspected Kuki militant dead, according to local reports.
The dead militant has been identified as 50-year-old Haogin Lhouvum. He was allegedly killed during an armed confrontation between rival groups near Lasan and Makui villages under Chalwa Police Station’s jurisdiction. Reports said intermittent firing continued in the area until about 2 p.m., prompting security forces to rush to the scene and launch extensive search operations to restore normalcy.
The clash followed the murder of 57-year-old Chunjanglung Panmei of Pongringlong Part‑2 village on Monday, June 8, 2026. Panmei was reportedly ambushed and shot dead by suspected Kuki militants while collecting firewood and repairing a water pipeline with other villagers; his body was later recovered with multiple bullet wounds.
After post‑mortem examination and completion of legal formalities at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) mortuary in Imphal, Panmei’s body was handed over to his family on Tuesday, June 9, in the presence of leaders from various Naga civil society organisations.
As Panmei’s remains reached Pongringlong Part‑2 near Tupul, the Joint Tribes’ Council, Manipur, together with the Coordination Committee, Longmai Area, organised a large joint condolence service. Hundreds from the Longmai (Noney) region gathered at Tupul Playground to pay their respects and take part in the last rites before he was laid to rest. Security operations and local tensions remain ongoing as authorities seek to contain further violence.
