Security Tightened After Farmer Shot Dead in Tamenglong, Manipur
A farmer was shot dead on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in Tamenglong district when suspected armed men opened fire on cultivators working in a paddy field, police said. The incident occurred at about 11:30 am near Lansan Kuki village, along the Imphal–Tamenglong road, under the jurisdiction of Tamei Police Station. The deceased was identified as 55-year-old Haogin Louvum, a resident of Lansan Kuki village and a member of the Kuki community.
Police said the body was recovered at the scene and shifted to Kangpokpi district for legal formalities. A case has been registered at the concerned police station and an investigation is underway, officials added. Authorities cautioned that the identity of the attackers and any organisational links have not been officially confirmed.
Local residents and some Kuki organisations have alleged the involvement of armed cadres believed to be linked to factions described variously as the Zeliangrong United Front (Kamson) and the NSCN-IM Kamson group. The Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills also claimed that Louvum’s body was prevented from passing through Makui village while being taken for last rites. Police have not validated these claims.
The killing comes amid heightened Naga–Kuki tensions in the hill districts. Earlier on Tuesday, 14 Kuki civilians who had been held by Naga civil bodies since May 13 were released; they had been detained after twin ambushes in Kangpokpi and Noney districts that left four people dead, including three church leaders and a Naga man. On Monday, Chunjanglung Panmei, 57, a Naga civilian, was reportedly killed in an alleged ambush at Pongringlong Part‑I in Kangpokpi while collecting firewood, further stoking inter-community anger.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur, the apex civil body of the Kuki community, described the Tamenglong killing as a “cold‑blooded murder” and accused the state’s security apparatus of serious failure. The organisation urged the district administration and security agencies to explain why vulnerable Kuki‑Zo villages in Tamenglong continue to face security threats despite ongoing tensions.
Police said tension persists along the Imphal–Tamenglong road and that security deployment in the area has been strengthened. Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the allegations by Kuki organisations. Investigations into the attack are continuing.
