GMC Cracks Down on Roadside Encroachments in Islam Nagar
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) carried out an eviction drive against roadside encroachments in the Islam Nagar area of Mathgharia, aiming to reclaim public space and ensure unobstructed access for commuters and pedestrians. The civic action targeted structures and obstructions along road corridors that had narrowed thoroughfares and blocked walkways.
According to the GMC, the operation was intended to keep public roads clear and accessible by restoring areas that had been encroached upon. Officials said removing illegal or informal occupation of road margins is necessary to return infrastructure to its planned use.
The corporation said such drives are essential for improving traffic movement and for preserving the intended function of public assets for citizens’ benefit. Clearing encroachments, the GMC added, should help reduce vehicle congestion and make streets safer and more navigable.
The removal of roadside obstructions is also expected to enhance pedestrian mobility by reopening footpaths and crossings that had been impeded. Restored road corridors, the civic body notes, will allow better management of urban space and smoother circulation for both vehicles and pedestrians.
GMC has conducted similar eviction drives in other parts of the city as part of a broader effort to maintain public infrastructure and improve civic amenities, the authority said, stressing continued enforcement to protect shared urban spaces.
