INDIA bloc meets 23 parties; Congress: ‘Janbandhan united’ — DMK out
New Delhi — Ahead of the INDIA bloc meeting scheduled for June 8 at the Constitution Club, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the opposition alliance remains united even as some parties have chosen not to attend. Ramesh posted on X that 23 political parties will be present at the gathering in the national capital.
Ramesh acknowledged that several parties are skipping the meeting for their “respective reasons,” but stressed they have nonetheless communicated opposition to the central government’s policies and actions. “INDIA Janbandhan stands united with its diversity,” he wrote on X.
Ramesh accused the Modi government of pursuing policies that, he said, undermine voting rights, attack the Constitution, target opposition leaders through investigative agencies, damage livelihoods, fuel persistent inflation, disappoint youth aspirations, weaken the investment climate and compromise national interests. He said the absent parties have strongly opposed those measures.
The meeting is seen as important not only for coordinating opposition to the BJP’s growing political dominance but also for managing internal differences. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a long-standing pillar of the INDIA bloc, has decided not to participate, citing what it called a “betrayal” by the Congress in Tamil Nadu after the state polls when Congress backed the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Congress had contested the elections as part of the DMK-led alliance and won five seats; that decision has strained relations between the two parties. In a letter announcing its absence, the DMK said it will, “as always, raise its voice on issues affecting the welfare of the nation,” and indicated it would continue to speak up on matters brought forward by the other participating parties.
With 23 parties confirmed to attend and key allies absent, the Constitution Club meeting will test the bloc’s ability to present a united front and to reconcile regional grievances while planning a coordinated approach to national issues.
