MoS Pledges Urgent Action to Restore North Sikkim Connectivity
Gangtok: During his recent visit to Sikkim, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister of State Ajay Tamta met State BJP president DR Thapa and assured that the Centre will prioritise measures to restore and strengthen road connectivity in North Sikkim, which has been severely disrupted by a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), a State BJP press release said. The meeting and the assurances were reported on June 7–8, 2026.
Tamta told the delegation that the ministry is currently implementing and pursuing road infrastructure projects in Sikkim worth approximately Rs 8,376 crore. He added that the cumulative investment in completed, ongoing and approved road projects in the state has now exceeded Rs 10,901 crore, figures the press release presented as evidence of the Government of India’s commitment to improving connectivity, safety and economic growth.
Thapa welcomed the minister and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for what he called their sustained focus on strengthening Sikkim’s road network. He said the Centre’s attention to connectivity is already playing a transformative role in accelerating development and improving livelihoods across the state.
The state BJP leader raised urgent concerns on behalf of people in North Sikkim, who continue to face hardship after the GLOF cut off key road links. He highlighted the unique difficulties of building and maintaining roads in Sikkim’s fragile, mountainous terrain and urged the ministry to use sustainable, environment‑friendly engineering solutions to ensure long‑term stability and reduce future disruptions.
According to the State BJP, Tamta assured that these concerns would be addressed as a matter of priority and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to building resilient infrastructure for the people of Sikkim.
