Tangkhul Body Accuses Assam Rifles of Shocking Excesses in Ukhrul
The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) on Sunday, June 7, 2026, condemned what it described as excesses by Assam Rifles personnel during confrontations with civilians in Ukhrul district, Manipur, saying clashes occurred at New Heaven, Finch Corner and Shokvao village as residents protested the establishment of a military outpost. The protest, the TNL said in a Media Cell statement, involved women from several Tangkhul Naga villages, elderly residents and student activists who opposed the outpost on the grounds that it was being installed without prior consent from village authorities and on land claimed to fall under Shokvao village’s jurisdiction; the statement refers to the site as “New Haven.”
TNL described the demonstration as democratic and peaceful but alleged that security forces used force to disperse the protesters. According to the organisation, Assam Rifles personnel fired multiple rounds from automatic rifles, deployed tear gas and carried out baton charges at different locations during the unrest. The statement further alleges that the commanding officer of the 40 Assam Rifles Battalion at Shangshak, identified as Colonel Sunil Singh Lunthi, personally led a baton charge against women protesters at Finch Corner.
Those injured were, the TNL said, taken to Ukhrul District Hospital for treatment. The organisation claimed more than 22 women were undergoing medical care there, with some reportedly in critical condition. TNL called the actions of the security personnel unjustified and inconsistent with the conduct expected of a professional paramilitary force.
The statement also questioned the role of elected representatives and governance institutions in responding to the incidents and urged scrutiny of how the outpost was authorised and sited. The claims in this report are drawn from the TNL statement; the organisation’s allegations have not been independently verified here, and the statement did not include any response from Assam Rifles or local government officials.
