Strategic Partnership to Boost Design Thinking in Meghalaya
Shillong, Sep 5: In a significant move to incorporate design thinking and innovation into its development strategy, Meghalayan Age Limited (MAL), a state-owned enterprise, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. The collaboration, under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, aims to create a robust framework that leverages design expertise to foster growth in Meghalaya.
The MoU was officially signed by Dr. Vijay Kumar D, Commissioner and Secretary of the Planning, Investment Promotion, and Sustainable Development Department (PIDSD) and Chairman and Managing Director of MAL, along with Praveen Nahar, Director of NID, Ahmedabad.
Dr. Vijay Kumar D outlined the key objectives of this partnership, emphasizing the development of a comprehensive Meghalaya State Design Policy Framework, the creation of an Institutional Framework for Meghalaya Design Lab, and the aspiration to establish Shillong as a leading ‘Design City’ recognized by UNESCO.
The agreement also includes the implementation of design thinking and innovation workshops, and the facilitation of exposure visits for Meghalaya’s stakeholders, artisans, and craftsmen from the handicraft and handloom sectors. These visits will be organized to various craft and design institutes in Gujarat, providing valuable insights and training.
Another vital component of the MoU is the development of bamboo handicraft clusters in Meghalaya. This initiative will be subject to the availability of faculty resources, time, and other priorities set by NID.
The MoU will be effective for three years, marking a pivotal step towards establishing Meghalaya as a hub for design-led development. This strategic partnership is poised to drive economic growth, enhance the state’s artisan skills, and position Shillong prominently on the global design map.
