Meghalaya Man Arrested in Probe Over Shocking Sonapur Elephant Killing
Sonapur Forest Range officials arrested a Meghalaya resident and seized ammunition-related items on June 4 as part of the investigation into the killing of a wild elephant in the Dikchak hills of Topatoli last month. The arrested man, identified as Salvation Nongrum of Ri-Bhoi district, was detained in a special operation carried out on the basis of specific intelligence developed during the probe. A case has been registered under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and after legal formalities Nongrum was produced before the competent court and remanded to judicial custody.
Forester-I Deep Kalita said the team recovered materials suspected to be used in the preparation of bullets, a dagger, cash and several other articles during the operation. Officials described the arrest and recoveries as an important development in the ongoing investigation but did not disclose the extent of Nongrum’s alleged involvement in the elephant’s death, saying inquiries are still in progress.
The arrest follows the discovery on May 12 of a male wild elephant found dead with gunshot injuries in the Dikchak hills under the Topatoli Beat area-an incident that had provoked widespread concern among local residents and wildlife conservationists. Forest authorities said the probe remains open and that all leads and aspects of the case are being examined as they pursue those responsible for the wildlife crime.
