Agartala, June 1, 2026 — Assembly Chief Whip and MLA Kalyani Saha Roy today chaired a meeting at the Municipal Conference Hall to address blocked earthen drains and resultant flooding linked to the ongoing National Highway construction on the Ichharbil–Karaillong Choumuhani corridor. She said work on the highway stretch from Khowai through Teliamura to Agartala has obstructed several existing drains, allowing rainwater to enter homes during the monsoon and worsening public hardship.
The meeting brought together the Municipal Council’s chairman, vice-chairman and councillors, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), the deputy chief executive officer, the executive officer, representatives of NHIDCL and Siptech, the PWD executive engineer, and engineers from the Department of Water Supply (DWS) and the Water Resources department. The group carried out a joint field inspection of the affected locations to assess the situation firsthand.
Kalyani Saha Roy said officials discussed “the immediate construction of temporary earthen drains and other necessary measures to ensure proper water drainage during the rainy season.” She described the joint inspection as evidence of officials’ commitment to resolving residents’ problems quickly and effectively.
She further assured residents, “We are always dedicated to safeguarding public interest and reducing the suffering of common citizens. Effective steps will be taken without delay.” The MLA emphasized prompt remedial action to prevent flooding while highway work continues.
The initiative represents a coordinated response by multiple agencies-including NHIDCL, PWD and local municipal authorities-to address the drainage crisis and provide relief to households along the Ichharbil–Karaillong Choumuhani stretch. Authorities said temporary drainage works and other short-term measures will be implemented ahead of the monsoon to mitigate further hardship.
