Assam CM Meets Rajnath Singh: Game-Changing Defence Manufacturing Push
New Delhi, May 31, 2026 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on the second day of a four-day visit to the national capital, met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday to discuss plans for expanding the defence manufacturing ecosystem in Assam. After the meeting Sarma also announced that the expansion of the Assam Council of Ministers is scheduled for June 5, saying the move has the BJP central leadership’s approval and will follow the return of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya from abroad.
Sarma told reporters he had thanked Rajnath Singh for his time and for campaigning during the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, saying, “I met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and thanked him for his time and campaign efforts during the Assam Assembly elections on behalf of the party as well as the people of Assam. We also briefly discussed further expansion and establishment of the defence industry in Assam.”
The chief minister said he sought the Defence Minister’s guidance on moving the sector forward and received suggestions aimed at attracting investment and industry participation. According to Sarma, Rajnath Singh recommended holding “an extensive exhibition as well as a conference with integrated participation of defence industries across public sector undertakings and private sector in Assam.”
Sarma added that the Defence Minister had promised support and cooperation: “Defence Minister also promised to extend support and cooperation in the same and we will work in that direction,” he said.
Later on Sunday Sarma met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who congratulated him on the NDA’s election performance and assured continued support for Assam’s development. In a social media post Jaishankar wrote, “Pleased to meet Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Congratulated him on the impressive election victory. Assured fullest support for Assam’s further growth and development.”
The meetings follow a discussion Sarma held with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, May 30, and are part of a series of planned talks with senior Union ministers and central leaders on governance, development and investment for Assam.
