Mandaviya to Inaugurate Polo Indoor Stadium — Historic Grand Opening
SHILLONG, May 27 — A new Rs 125 crore multipurpose indoor stadium at the JN Stadium complex in Polo, Shillong — billed as the largest in the Northeast — will be inaugurated on Saturday, May 30, by Union Minister of Youth Affairs Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, according to a report issued on May 27. The facility has been built ahead of the upcoming National Games and is designed to host multiple indoor sports.
The report also notes varying accounts about the opening-day attendees: while Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya is named as the inaugurator, it is learnt that the Union Sports Minister is expected to be present and that Indian Olympic Association chief P.T. Usha will attend the ceremony. Organisers have positioned the event as a major addition to the region’s sports infrastructure.
Constructed with an outlay of Rs 125 crore, the stadium provides dedicated spaces for basketball, badminton, squash, boxing, snooker and other indoor disciplines. Officials say the complex was developed specifically with the National Games in mind and aims to meet competition standards across multiple sports.
The new indoor arena at Polo is intended to expand Shillong’s capacity to host national-level events and to leave a lasting sporting legacy in the Northeast.
