Delhi Fuel Hike: Petrol Tops Rs 102, Diesel Rs 95.20/L
State-owned oil companies raised petrol and diesel prices for the fourth time in two weeks on Monday, May 25, 2026, with the new retail rates in Delhi standing at Rs 102.12 per litre for petrol (up Rs 2.61) and Rs 95.20 per litre for diesel (up Rs 2.71). This revision follows an increase two days earlier on Saturday, May 23, when petrol rose by Rs 0.87 and diesel by Rs 0.91 per litre, and a sharper adjustment on May 16 that pushed rates up by roughly Rs 3 in several cities.
Officials and industry analysts point to sustained pressure from rising global crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia as the main drivers behind the consecutive hikes. Higher international oil import costs have translated into upward revisions of domestic pump prices despite existing tax structures and subsidy mechanisms.
The back-to-back increases are expected to ripple through the economy by raising transportation and logistics costs, which could feed into higher prices for goods and services and add inflationary pressure on household budgets, especially in urban areas heavily dependent on road transport. Daily commuters, transport operators and small businesses have expressed concern over mounting operational expenses.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said India has adequate petrol and diesel supplies and urged the public to avoid panic buying or unnecessary crowding at fuel stations. The ministry added that any temporary shortages at select outlets are being managed through continuous monitoring and coordinated distribution by oil marketing companies and asked consumers to practise responsible usage to ensure smooth availability.
Government sources defended the price revisions as necessary to offset increased import bills and to maintain fuel supply stability amid volatile international markets. Economists warn that if global crude prices remain elevated, further domestic adjustments may follow, prolonging pressure on inflation and household spending.
