New Delhi, May 25 — Petrol and diesel prices were raised by Rs 2.61 and Rs 2.71 per litre respectively on Monday, the fourth increase in under two weeks as state-owned fuel retailers passed on rising international oil costs to consumers. With the latest revision, cumulative hikes since fuel price revisions resumed on May 15 have nearly reached Rs 7.5 per litre, stoking concerns about inflationary pressure and higher transportation costs across the economy.
According to industry sources, petrol in Delhi was increased to Rs 102.12 a litre from Rs 99.51, while diesel rose to Rs 95.20 from Rs 92.49. The rises come after a prolonged freeze in retail prices that ended when adjustments resumed on May 15.
Earlier adjustments included a Rs 3 per litre increase for both fuels on May 15, a 90‑paise rise on May 19, and an 87‑paise increase in petrol and a 91‑paise rise in diesel on May 23. These back‑to‑back revisions reflect international and domestic cost pressures rather than a single policy move.
After Monday’s change, petrol at PSU pumps in Mumbai now costs Rs 111.21 per litre and diesel Rs 97.83; in Kolkata petrol is Rs 113.51 and diesel Rs 99.82; in Chennai petrol is Rs 107.77 and diesel Rs 99.55. Final retail prices continue to vary across states because of differing local taxes.
Industry officials point to elevated global crude prices, tightening refining margins and a weaker rupee-factors that have sharply increased import costs. Global crude has surged more than 50% since late February amid geopolitical tensions, including US‑Israeli strikes on Iran and disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, analysts say.
State‑owned Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum together control about 90% of India’s fuel market, leaving consumers exposed to international price swings and domestic tax variations. PTI
