US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he is sending an additional 5,000 U.S. troops to Poland, a move he posted on his Truth Social account after Washington had earlier said a planned deployment was called off amid pressure on Europe to shoulder more of its own defence. The announcement does not include operational details or timelines.
Trump framed the decision as tied to his relationship with Poland’s president, Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist ally whom Trump said he was “proud to endorse” after Nawrocki’s election victory last year. On Truth Social Trump wrote, “I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland.”
His comments appear to refer to the fate of several thousand U.S. forces whose deployment to Poland had been unclear in recent days. Last week U.S. officials said a planned deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland had been scrapped — part of a broader pattern under the Trump administration of reducing troop levels and using force posture to pressure allies. Vice President J.D. Vance later said the 4,000-troop move had been delayed, not cancelled, and that Mr. Trump had not made a “final determination.”
Administration officials have signalled that the president is pushing European NATO members to carry a greater share of defence responsibilities. The White House has also indicated a willingness to penalise allies that do not back U.S. positions on the Middle East conflict or contribute to security operations in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively closed. Early in May, the Pentagon announced plans to pull about 5,000 troops from Germany after Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Iran was “humiliating” the United States at the negotiating table.
