Guwahati, May 21 — With the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly in session, the Congress party is holding a crucial legislature meeting this evening during which the party high command is expected to take a final decision on the appointment of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in the state. The choice is seen as pivotal because it will also pave the way for the formal selection of the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly.
The decision comes amid heightened attention to Congress’s leadership structure after the formation of the new Assembly. Party insiders say the CLP leader will play a central role in coordinating the party’s strategy and legislative response during the ongoing session, shaping how Congress operates inside the House.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, speaking to the press after returning from discussions with the party high command in Delhi, said the All India Congress Committee (AICC) will decide only after consulting party legislators. “I have discussed the matter with the All India Congress Committee (AICC). As part of the process, they will hold discussions with the MLAs and only after that a decision will be taken. I have informed them that our meeting will be held and whatever decision is taken by the party leadership, we will accept it,” Gogoi said.
The CLP meeting is expected to include both newly elected and senior Congress legislators, who will not only consider leadership but also discuss the party’s approach to business in the Assembly. In parliamentary practice, the CLP leader is the elected Congress legislators’ chosen head inside the legislature; that person typically becomes the formal Leader of the Opposition if the party meets the required criteria.
Birsing Jorua MLA Wajed Ali said the group will leave final selection to the AICC and its observers. “We do not have any decision to make on our own. The AICC observer will come and after discussions with all of us, the final decision will be taken. We have called the new MLAs and together we will go to the Assembly,” he said.
The appointment of the CLP leader will therefore be closely watched as it determines Congress’s internal cohesion and its tactical posture in the Assembly during the current session.
