A satirical social-media page called Kakor’s Janata Party — created in protest of a controversial remark by Chief Justice Suryakant — has sparked nationwide attention after its accounts saw explosive growth this month. The page’s Instagram account reportedly crossed 6,000,000 followers within five days, while its X (formerly Twitter) handle has grown to roughly 126,000 followers; according to the post, the Instagram following alone jumped by more than 4,000,000 in a single day. By comparison the post notes that the Indian National Congress’s Instagram presence is about 13,200,000 followers and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s is about 870,000, underscoring how quickly the new account has gained traction.
The page was launched by Abhijit Dipke, a young man from Maharashtra who is said to be pursuing a master’s degree in public relations at Boston University. Dipke recently unveiled the movement’s emblem and describes the page’s slogan as “secular, socialist, democratic and unconventional.” He says he began the project after seeing the chief justice’s comment on X and wanting to measure the mood of younger Indians, particularly those under 25.
The genesis of the social-media movement traces back to coverage on May 15 that said Chief Justice Suryakant compared some earnest young people to “kakor’s” or petty thieves during a court hearing. The next day the chief justice issued a clarification, saying he had not targeted earnest young people but had referred to those who enter the professions and media with fake degrees as parasites. Nonetheless, that clarification did not stem online anger among many young users, and that backlash helped spawn Kakor’s Janata Party.
The page has also published membership requirements and a short manifesto. It lists four eligibility traits for members — authenticity, a strongly unconventional outlook, an active online presence, and the ability to express frustration professionally — and sets out five major pledges. Those pledges, as described on the page, include banning retired chief justices from receiving Rajya Sabha seats as a post-retirement reward, invoking strict action (including arrest under UAPA) against the chief election official if valid votes are deleted, raising women’s reservations from 33 percent to 50 percent without increasing the total number of MPs, reserving half of cabinet seats for women, canceling licenses of major private news outlets owned by specific conglomerates and investigating allegedly partisan anchors’ bank accounts, and imposing a 20-year ban from public office for any legislator who defects.
