Former SDF Minister Tshering Wangdi Set to Join SKM
GANGTOK, Sep 05, 2024 [IST]: In a significant political development, former Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) minister, Tshering Wangdi Lepcha, is poised to join the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party. This move follows a recent meeting between Wangdi and Chief Minister PS Golay on Wednesday.
The meeting took place during an event organized by the Former Legislators Federation of Sikkim in Gangtok. The gathering included former Members of Parliament and ex-legislators, notably those previously aligned with the SDF. The political landscape stirred with speculation after reports surfaced on social media suggesting Wangdi’s impending switch to the SKM. These rumors were further fueled when Wangdi posted a photo with Chief Minister Golay on his social media account, captioning it, "An honor and privilege to meet HCM Golay Sir! Positive, promising, and Effective one!"
In a brief conversation with SIKKIM EXPRESS, Wangdi confirmed his decision, stating, "I met the Chief Minister today and shortly I will be joining the SKM."
Wangdi previously contested the 2024 Assembly election from the Gnathang-Machong constituency as an SDF candidate but was defeated by the SKM nominee. He has also served as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Lachen-Mangan constituency for two terms and held the position of Forest Minister during his tenure.
This shift in allegiance comes as a notable enhancement to the SKM and underscores the evolving political dynamics in Sikkim.
