On Monday, May 18, 2026, the Delhi High Court refused to grant interim relief to three‑time Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, denying her permission to compete in the Asian Games selection trials scheduled for May 30–31, 2026. A bench led by Justice Purushendra Kumar Kourav said it could not stay a WFI (Wrestling Federation of India) order that had already declared Phogat ineligible for domestic competitions, and therefore declined to allow her participation ahead of a full hearing.
The WFI had issued a notice on May 9 and declared Phogat ineligible to compete in all domestic events, including the National Open Ranking tournament, until June 26, 2026. Under new federation directives, the association had also restricted participation in the Asian Games trials to medalists from specific events — the 2025 Senior National Championship in Ahmedabad, the 2026 Senior Federation Cup in Ghaziabad, and the 2026 National U‑20 championships held in Vilai — saying prior achievements or relaxations would not be considered.
The dispute follows Phogat’s return-to-sport announcement in December 2025 after an August 2024 retirement that came in the wake of her disqualification from the Paris Olympics final for exceeding her weight by 100 grams. Although she declared a comeback last December, she has not yet competed. The WFI says she failed to complete a mandatory six‑month notification period required under WADA anti‑doping rules for athletes returning from retirement, and has also faced allegations of misconduct and anti‑doping rule violations in the show‑cause notice.
At the hearing, the court acknowledged Phogat’s maternity leave and said it understood her personal circumstances but emphasized the need to protect national sporting interests. The bench observed there was no time for interim relief because the federation had already declared her ineligible and the other party had not been heard. Senior counsel Rajshekhar Rao, appearing for Phogat, argued that much more remained hidden in the case and pressed for permission for her to compete. He said Phogat had been allowed to register for a Gonda tournament scheduled for May 10–11 but was barred from participation after the May 9 notice, removing what he called a crucial opportunity to prove her fitness.
The court has permitted Phogat to file a detailed reply to the May 9 notice and directed the WFI to take a final decision before the next hearing on July 6, 2026. It has issued notices to the central government, the WFI and the Indian Olympic Association in the matter. The confrontation marks the latest chapter in a long‑running conflict between Phogat and the federation, which earlier included her high‑profile role among six wrestlers who accused former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment and her vocal opposition to holding competitions in his home region.
