Air India’s New MRO Facility in Bengaluru: A Boost for Indian Aviation
In a significant move to enhance India’s aviation infrastructure, Air India has launched a new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Campbell Wilson, MD & CEO of Air India, highlighted the facility’s role in bolstering the nation’s aviation ecosystem and improving the airline’s self-sufficiency in maintaining its fleet.
Wilson emphasized that the MRO facility is part of Air India’s strategic efforts to build a world-class, self-reliant aviation infrastructure. He stated that the new infrastructure would enhance base and line maintenance capabilities across Air India’s network, creating job opportunities for skilled engineers and ensuring a steady flow of trained personnel for aircraft maintenance.
The new facility in Bengaluru, along with expansions in Mumbai and Delhi, aims to make Air India self-reliant in fleet maintenance by 2025. This initiative follows Air India’s memorandum of understanding with the Government of Karnataka and a partnership with SIA Engineering Company for the facility’s development.
Gunjan Krishna, Commissioner for Industrial Development, and Hari Marar, CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited, both noted the project’s significance in establishing Bengaluru as a global aviation hub. The facility is expected to generate over 1,200 direct jobs for skilled engineers and support over 200 SMEs in Karnataka, providing numerous indirect employment opportunities.
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including tele platforms, cranes, universal docking systems, and the largest vertical lift hangar doors in India, the MRO facility will set new standards in aviation maintenance. This development marks a critical step in strengthening Karnataka’s MRO ecosystem and Air India’s fleet maintenance capabilities.
