Police Deployed After Cultivation Clash on Assam-Meghalaya Border
Tension erupted along the Assam–Meghalaya border in the Tapat area of West Karbi Anglong district on Sunday after a dispute over cultivation on land the administration had declared disputed. Officials said the situation began when people from the Khasi community, from the Meghalaya side, allegedly came to cultivate a parcel of land that lies within West Karbi Anglong. Local Karbi residents opposed the move and tried to stop the cultivation, triggering a tense face-off between the two communities.
As the confrontation grew volatile, senior administrative officials rushed to the scene and a large police deployment was sent to prevent any untoward incident. Authorities held a meeting to defuse the situation that included senior officials from West Jaintia Hills district and representatives from Hamren. The talks were an attempt to find an immediate, non-violent resolution to the dispute.
Tension resurfaced during the meeting after four civilians from Meghalaya were allowed to join the discussions. Members of the Karbi community reportedly objected to their presence, leading to heated arguments at the venue. The administration continued the discussion only after the four civilians stepped out of the meeting.
Despite the intervention and talks, officials were unable to reach a final decision on the status or use of the disputed land. The border area remains tense, with security personnel maintaining a strict vigil to prevent further escalation. The standoff underscores persistent local sensitivities over boundary and land-rights issues along the Assam–Meghalaya border and the need for an agreed administrative or legal resolution to prevent future clashes.
