Tripura’s Ambitious 193 Flood-Control Projects to Stop Erosion
Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that the state has completed 42 dams and will implement 193 additional flood-control projects to combat river erosion and reduce flood risks across the state. Speaking at the inauguration of the State Data Centre, Saha said these measures are part of a broader drive to strengthen irrigation and flood-management systems using better data and technology.
Saha warned that all 10 major rivers in Tripura that flow into Bangladesh are suffering from siltation caused by soil erosion in the hill regions, largely linked to recent deforestation. He said this siltation has created low-lying stretches and contributed to flash floods in urban areas during heavy rains, highlighting an urgent need for coordinated interventions.
Beyond civil works, the chief minister stressed the importance of institutional reforms alongside infrastructure development. He described the State Data Centre as a landmark step for the state, intended to provide accurate, timely data to support decision-making on water resources, irrigation planning and flood mitigation.
To modernise administration, Saha announced plans to roll out a three-tier e-office system aimed at streamlining procedures and improving management of water resources. He also referenced the National Hydrology Project launched under the 2016-17 flagship programme and noted investments made to establish and expand the State Data Centre as part of that effort.
Linking the initiatives to national priorities, Saha invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on applying knowledge and modern technology to governance. He portrayed the combined approach of field infrastructure, data-driven systems and administrative reform as essential to reducing disaster risk and protecting communities.
If successfully implemented, the package of dams, river-control projects and digital tools could help curb erosion, reduce siltation and limit urban flash floods — outcomes that would directly affect agricultural productivity, local livelihoods and urban safety in Tripura.
