Boeing Confirms China Order for 200 Planes — Market-Shaking Deal
Aerospace giant Boeing said on Friday that China has committed to purchase 200 aircraft, confirming an announcement made by U.S. President Donald Trump during his visit to Beijing. The company said the commitment represents an initial tranche and that further orders are expected to follow.
In a statement, Boeing — whose CEO Kelly Ortberg joined the U.S. delegation to China — said the trip had been “very successful” and had achieved the company’s “major goal of reopening the China market to orders for Boeing aircraft.” The statement added: “This included an initial commitment for 200 aircraft and we expect further commitments will follow after this initial tranche,” and thanked the Trump administration “for making this milestone happen.”
President Trump, speaking earlier in media interviews and to reporters aboard Air Force One, referred to the arrangement as a commitment. In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity he said, “I think it was a commitment,” adding, “That’s a lot of jobs.” On the flight home, Trump told reporters the discussions included “a promise of 750 planes, which will be by far the largest order ever, if they do a good job with the 200.”
The announcement marks Boeing’s first confirmed Chinese order since 2017, when Beijing placed a deal for some 300 single-aisle and wide-body planes valued at about $37 billion. U.S. media have for months reported that China was considering a much larger order — widely described as including roughly 500 single-aisle 737 MAX jets and about 100 larger 787 Dreamliners and 777s — though Boeing’s statement framed the 200-aircraft commitment as an initial step.
Boeing said it looks forward to “continually addressing China’s aircraft demand” as the parties move from an initial commitment toward any definitive purchase agreements. (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)
