LSG Stun CSK with Emphatic 7-Wicket IPL Win Tonight
Lucknow, May 15: Mitchell Marsh’s blistering 38-ball 90 powered an already-eliminated Lucknow Super Giants to a seven-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in an IPL match here on Friday. Marsh’s assault, supported by an aggressive opening stand with Josh Inglis, made light work of Chennai’s 187 for five and ended the chase with more than half the overs to spare.
Chennai posted a competitive 187/5, anchored by Kartik’s composed 71 off 42 balls. After a shaky start that left them 52 for three inside 7.2 overs, Kartik and Brevis (25) rebuilt the innings with a 70-run fourth-wicket partnership to give CSK something to defend.
The Super Giants’ reply was explosive. Marsh and Inglis added 135 for the opening wicket, with Inglis contributing 36 off 31. The pair turned a slightly two-paced Lucknow surface into a launchpad, racing the score along and exposing some wayward bowling from the Super Kings.
Chennai’s bowlers repeatedly pitched up in search of swing that didn’t arrive; several attempted cutters and short deliveries became scoring opportunities. Pacer Anshul Kamboj was smacked for four consecutive sixes and a four in the fifth over of the chase, an over that yielded 28 runs. LSG finished the Power Play on 86 without loss.
Marsh reached his fifty off just 21 balls and continued to accelerate. Spencer Johnson also paid the price, conceding two fours and a six as Marsh dominated the strike. The opening stand ended when Inglis skied Mukesh Choudhary to Urvil, but Marsh appeared set for a century.
His innings ended in unfortunate fashion when a Nicholas Pooran straight drive took a deflection off Choudhary’s fingers and crashed into the non-striker’s stumps. Still, Pooran (32 off 17) finished the job, belting Kamboj for four sixes in quick succession as LSG reached the target in 16.4 overs. Kamboj finished with costly figures of 2.4-0-63-0.
Chennai remain on 12 points from as many games and now face the steep task of winning their remaining two matches and relying on other results to keep faint play-off hopes alive. (PTI)
