Centre Approves New Reserve Battalion for Tripura: Major Boost
Agartala, 15 May 2026 — The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the raising of an Indian Reserve (IR) Battalion in Tripura, the ministry informed the Tripura Chief Secretary in a letter dated May 15. The President of India has formally granted permission for the new battalion, and the Home Ministry will provide a one‑time grant of Rs 50 crore to raise the unit, with an additional Rs 30 crore earmarked for infrastructure development and land acquisition.
The letter directs the state government to raise the battalion in accordance with all prescribed norms applicable to armed forces units. While the Centre will supply the initial funding noted above, the state government will be responsible for annual recurring expenditure and any remaining infrastructure costs.
As an Indian Reserve Battalion, the new force is intended primarily to bolster Tripura’s internal security apparatus but may also be deployed by the Government of India elsewhere in the country as security needs arise. The central funding and the IR designation aim to provide both local reinforcement and national flexibility.
Tripura currently fields TSR battalions up to the 15th battalion level. According to the information in the letter, there are presently 13 active battalions-two had been disbanded earlier-and one of the existing units is an all‑women battalion. With the formation of the approved unit, the state’s force will effectively expand to a 16th battalion level.
Officials say the Centre’s approval is expected to strengthen Tripura’s overall security mechanism by increasing manpower and improving infrastructure, while also giving the Union government an additional rapid‑deployment resource if required. The state government will now begin the process of raising the battalion under the specified norms.
