Lucknow, May 14 — Chennai Super Kings, still in contention for a playoff spot despite an uneven season, will aim to extend their recent revival when they face the already-eliminated Lucknow Super Giants in an IPL match here on Friday. CSK sit fifth with six wins from 11 matches and face a simple but urgent equation: win their remaining games and hope other results go their way.
Chennai’s mid- and late-season revival has relied on timely contributions rather than a dominant run. Sanju Samson, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and young opener Urvil Patel have supplied crucial runs, while Urvil’s aggressive starts have boosted CSK’s powerplay momentum. The bowling outlook has taken a hit with all-rounder Jamie Overton ruled out for the rest of the tournament with a thigh injury and sent back to the UK for further assessment. Overton’s 14 wickets in 10 matches made him one of CSK’s most effective bowlers this season, and his absence is a significant setback for Chennai’s playoff push. Still, a disciplined and varied attack led by Akeal Hosein, supported by Mukesh Choudhary, Anshul Kamboj and Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad, has helped the side grind out important victories.
Lucknow arrive with little to play for beyond pride after a season of inconsistent displays. Captain Rishabh Pant’s prolonged poor form and a bowling unit that has repeatedly failed to defend totals have been central to LSG’s decline; they were unable to defend 203 against CSK earlier in the tournament. Individual flashes from Josh Inglis, Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh have not been enough to lift the team out of the lower reaches of the 10-team table.
