Raju Mesh Tours Assam–Meghalaya Border, Urgently Reviews Civic Issues
Newly elected Boko–Chaygaon MLA Raju Mesh on Thursday, May 14 conducted a day-long inspection of several Assam–Meghalaya border areas to assess local problems and hear residents’ grievances, focusing on healthcare, education, erosion control and road connectivity. The tour included Sonaram Rabha, chairman of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council; executive member Sumit Rabha; Boko–Chaygaon co-district commissioner Priyanshu Bhardwaj; assistant CDC Raben Deuri; Sub-Divisional Medical Officer Dhruba Baruah; PWD Sub-Divisional Officer Saifuddin Ahmed; Water Resources Department executive engineer Pranab Chetia; other officials and local residents.
In Lalmatia, Mesh inspected the partially functioning Model Hospital where health workers and villagers complained of a severe shortage of doctors and staff. Residents urged prompt government appointments to restore regular services and improve access to basic healthcare.
At Hahim, the delegation examined long-standing erosion reportedly caused by the Hahim river that has damaged farmland, homes and local livelihoods over several years. Mesh expressed concern and discussed possible long-term measures with Water Resources Department officials, while calling for immediate interventions to check further riverbank loss.
In Lampi, the MLA visited local schools and found villagers pressing for more teachers and improved educational facilities. At the Lampi health centre, residents told the team that medical staff visit only once a week, forcing patients to travel nearly 40 kilometres to the Boko Primary Health Centre for treatment.
Road connectivity emerged as another major issue. Officials said repair work on the road to Upper Lampi has stalled after objections from a section of residents in neighbouring Meghalaya, even though there is reportedly no official restriction from the Meghalaya government. Contractors told the delegation that they had not received written clearance from the Meghalaya Police, leading to suspension of construction work.
Mesh assured residents that necessary steps would be taken to resume repairs and address the wider concerns raised. The visit underlined persistent development gaps in the Assam–Meghalaya border belt and the MLA’s commitment to early intervention on healthcare, education, erosion control and infrastructure.
