ইউনিফৰ্ম চিভিল ক’ডে জনজাতি ক্ষতিগ্ৰস্ত নহ’ব — ৰূপালী লাংথাছাৰৰ আশ্বাস
Newly elected Dima Hasao BJP MLA Rupali Langthasa said in Guwahati on May 14 that the Assam government’s proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), slated to be introduced in the next assembly session, will not affect the state’s tribal communities or their customary way of life. Langthasa emphasized that tribal customs and traditions will remain protected even after the law is enacted.
Speaking to reporters, she said the tribal societies of the region have followed their traditional practices for centuries and will continue to do so, adding that the UCC “will not harm” those practices. Her remarks came shortly after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the state’s plan to table a UCC bill, while reportedly keeping hilly and tribal areas outside the law’s scope.
The proposed legislation is expected to cover issues commonly addressed by a civil code, such as marriage registration, inheritance rights, recognition of live‑in relationships, and a uniform minimum age for marriage. Langthasa framed her comments as reassurance that these reforms would be implemented without undermining tribal identity or customary norms.
Langthasa also responded to a separate political controversy involving Congress leader Pawan Khera, strongly criticizing allegations made against the chief minister’s wife. She called it “deeply unfortunate” to level accusations against a woman without evidence and said any response should follow established legal principles.
Her statements have attracted attention amid the wider political confrontation between the BJP and Congress in Assam. The exchange underscores how the UCC debate intersects with identity, customary law and partisan politics, and why assurances about tribal exemptions are likely to be closely watched by communities and political actors alike.
