Senior BJP leader Chandramohan Patowary will be sworn in as Pro-tem Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Friday, May 15, 2026, with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administering the oath at Raj Bhavan at 11:30 AM, official sources said. The appointment precedes the start of proceedings in the newly constituted Assembly after the 2026 state elections.
As Pro-tem Speaker, Patowary will preside over the Assembly’s initial sessions, administer the oath to newly elected MLAs and oversee the election of the full-time Speaker of the House. The temporary role is a routine step to ensure the Assembly’s first formal business is conducted smoothly.
The development comes alongside major portfolio changes in the new Assam cabinet under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who begins a second consecutive term. In a significant reshuffle, senior minister Ajanta Neog has been removed from the Finance Ministry and reassigned to the Women and Child Development and Tourism departments, according to an official notification approved by Governor Acharya on May 14, 2026.
Neog had served as Assam’s Finance Minister in the previous term and was regarded as a central figure in the government’s fiscal management. The reassignment marks one of the most notable changes in the BJP-led government’s second-term lineup.
The notification also detailed other ministerial responsibilities in the expanded cabinet. Rameswar Teli has been allocated Transformation and Development, Labour Welfare, and Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare. Atul Bora will handle Panchayat and Rural Development, Implementation of the Assam Accord, Border Protection and Development, and Excise. Charan Boro has been given charge of Transport along with Welfare of Bodoland.
In his communication to the Chief Minister, the Governor said he had approved the suggested portfolio allocations “as suggested.” These moves set the administrative framework for the new government as it prepares to take up legislative and governance duties in the coming days.
