Meghalaya CM Launches 95 Police Vehicles to Boost Security & Response
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday flagged off a new fleet of 95 police vehicles at the Police Officers’ Mess in Golflink, Shillong, in a move meant to boost the mobility, operational readiness and emergency response capacity of the Meghalaya Police. Director General of Police I. Nongrang (Idashisha Nongrang) attended the ceremony along with senior government officials and police personnel.
Officials said 79 of the 95 vehicles were purchased using funds from the Government of India under the Central Assistance to State Police Scheme. The fleet includes 20 Maruti Jimny SUVs, 19 heavy Tata truck troop carriers, five Mahindra mini trucks, 19 bus troop carriers with 20-seat capacity, 10 with 24 seats, eight with 36 seats, and eight Tata Yodha vehicles earmarked for the CID. The procurement cost is estimated at nearly Rs. 30 crore.
Sangma framed the induction as part of a broader police modernisation push and reaffirmed the government’s priority on law and order. “The maintenance of law and order remains one of the most critical responsibilities of any government. Our commitment to strengthening law enforcement is reflected not just in our words, but more importantly, in our actions,” he said.
The chief minister cited recent reforms such as the Police Reserve Fund-originating from district-level suggestions-and widespread upgrades to infrastructure that was previously in disrepair. He said authority and responsibility have been delegated to Superintendents of Police and unit commanders to ensure faster decision-making and execution.
Highlighting manpower gains, Sangma noted the recruitment of over 3,000 personnel into long-vacant posts as evidence of the administration’s support for the force. He described the vehicle procurement as small in appearance but significant in impact: “Today’s programme may appear to be a simple one, but it is highly meaningful. With the procurement of nearly 95 vehicles at a cost of approximately Rs. 30 crore, we are significantly enhancing the operational capabilities of our force.”
Sangma also stressed efforts to strengthen police presence beyond urban centres, saying the government is upgrading police stations, outposts and border outposts to ensure the force is visible across the state, not only in Shillong. He commended officers for their professionalism during recent tensions in Lapangap in West Jaintia Hills, noting the police role in maintaining peace while the government pursued dialogue with stakeholders and Assam on the interstate boundary issue.
Congratulating the leadership, he said, “I would like to congratulate our Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, and her entire team for their dedication, leadership, and commitment in ensuring that law and order is maintained across the state.” He added appreciation for rank-and-file personnel: “It is because of your hard work, commitment, courage, and sacrifice that our state remains safe, and our people are able to go about their daily lives with confidence and security. I want to assure each one of you that our government will continue to stand with you, support you, and provide every possible assistance.”
Officials urged proper maintenance and effective utilisation of the new vehicles to sustain gains in public safety and service delivery. The programme concluded with the formal flagging off of the fleet in the presence of dignitaries and senior police officials.
