Nagaland Mudslides Claim Six Lives, Cause Major Disruptions on National Highway-29
In Nagaland, a devastating series of mudslides and landslides has resulted in the loss of six lives and left three others injured. The calamities, triggered by heavy rainfall, have significantly impacted National Highway-29, a critical route between Kohima and Dimapur. Among the deceased are five males and one female.
The mudslides and landslides struck near Pherima and Tseipama on the previous night, followed by another landslide at Pagla Pahar early this morning, which sank a portion of the highway. In response to the disaster, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio convened a high-level meeting to evaluate the situation and discuss immediate restoration and relief measures.
Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang announced through Akashvani News that the state government has declared an ex-gratia payment of four lakh rupees for each family of the deceased and 16,000 rupees for the injured as emergency relief. National Highway-29, now completely shut off for vehicular movement, serves as a vital lifeline for commuters traveling to the state capital, Kohima, and to the neighboring state of Manipur.
Efforts are underway to restore the highway and ensure the safety of residents. The disruption has further highlighted the challenges faced by the region, particularly during heavy rainfall seasons, raising concerns about the need for improved infrastructure and proactive disaster management strategies.
The recent events underscore the urgency of implementing better land management practices and ensuring robust preparedness to mitigate such disasters in the future. The government’s swift response and commitments to relief measures are steps in the right direction, offering some solace to the grieving families and affected citizens. As restoration work progresses, the community remains hopeful for rapid recovery and reinstatement of normalcy on this crucial route.
