Guwahati, May 11 — Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Assam’s Chief Minister for a second consecutive term at a grand ceremony in Guwahati on Monday, as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power in the state for a third straight term following a decisive mandate in the recent Assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sarma on social media, calling it “a great day for Assam” and praising Sarma as a “wonderful administrator” who has done pioneering work for the state (Modi’s post is dated May 12, 2026).
The ceremony also saw four ministers take oath as members of the new Council of Ministers: former Union minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) leader Charan Boro and senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog. In a separate social media message, Modi extended his best wishes to the newly inducted ministers and said he hoped they would bolster Assam’s development trajectory.
Senior BJP and NDA leaders attended the swearing-in, including Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from 22 NDA-ruled states were present, underscoring the political significance of the event. Fifteen Satradhikars from Assam’s Vaishnavite monasteries attended, highlighting the ceremony’s cultural resonance.
United States Ambassador to India and Special Envoy to South and Central Asia Sergio Gor was among the foreign dignitaries at the event. Posting after the ceremony, Gor said he was “honored to have been invited to Guwahati today” and emphasised growing commercial ties between Assam and the United States, adding that the state’s leadership would help identify more mutually beneficial opportunities.
Sarma first assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021. Under his leadership, the BJP has further consolidated its political strength in Assam, securing a third consecutive term for the NDA. (IANS)
