Kolkata, May 11 — West Bengal Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari on Monday told senior state officials to ensure transparency, accountability and strict adherence to rules, and warned that officers would be held responsible for any lapses, a source said. The directive came during his first administrative review meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna, a day after he assumed office as the BJP’s first chief minister in the state.
Adhikari chaired the review attended by Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala, Home Secretary Sanghamitra Ghosh and the secretaries and principal secretaries of all departments. He set out expectations for disciplined, rule-bound governance and urged officials to focus on delivering services professionally.
Addressing what he described as a habit of invoking his predecessor’s style, Adhikari asked officials not to repeatedly use the phrase “By the inspiration of the chief minister” in routine communications to curry favour. The expression, he noted, had appeared widely in government announcements during Mamata Banerjee’s tenure. “There is no need to use phrases like ‘Chief Minister’s inspiration’ at every step,” he was quoted as saying by a source present at the meeting.
On financial management, Adhikari warned against unnecessary expenditure while allowing for essential spending. “You can spend where necessary, but there should be no wastage of public money,” he told officials, according to sources.
He also emphasised that the administration would give officers the dignity and space to work professionally, but made clear that proven allegations would lead to action. “If any allegation against an officer is proved, action will be taken,” he said.
The meeting signals the new chief minister’s intent to set a tone of fiscal prudence and rule-based administration in the early days of his government, the source added. (PTI)
