NDA Stakes Bold Claim to Form Assam Government After Lok Bhavan Meet
On Sunday, May 10, leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) met Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhavan and formally staked their claim to form the next government in Assam, naming Chief Minister‑elect Himanta Biswa Sarma as their choice to lead the administration.
The NDA delegation that visited Lok Bhavan included J. P. Nadda, appointed the BJP’s central observer, and Nayab Singh Saini, the party’s co‑observer, along with Sarma and other senior alliance leaders. Officials said the alliance submitted a formal claim to form the government, with the application carrying signatures from representatives of all three constituent parties in Assam: the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front.
Earlier on Sunday, Sarma was unanimously elected leader of the BJP‑led NDA in the Assam Assembly, clearing the path for his return as chief minister for a second consecutive term. If confirmed, he will be the first non‑Congress leader in Assam to serve two successive terms as chief minister.
The NDA secured a decisive mandate in the recent Assembly elections, winning a two‑thirds majority in the 126‑member House. The BJP won 82 seats, while allies AGP and BPF won 10 seats each, taking the alliance tally to 102 seats.
The swearing‑in ceremony for the new government is scheduled for May 12 in Guwahati. The alliance’s clear majority is likely to provide political stability and continuity in the state’s administration.
