The citation specifically noted Labu Da’s pioneering role in organising the Regional Beat Contest in Shillong in 1967, an event credited with helping to nurture young musical talent and promoting youth culture during a transformative period in the region. Attendees also recalled his leadership of the first cycle rally in 1971, an initiative aimed at fostering unity and community participation, and his organisation of a beauty contest in 1974, which organisers said encouraged confidence and celebrated diversity.
Described by speakers as a visionary, Labu Da’s influence extends beyond event organisation into environmental consciousness and artistic practice. Widely known as the “Bonsai Man of Assam,” he received praise for his passion for bonsai cultivation, intricate wood carvings and a sensitive approach to photography.
