Tripura University Celebrates Rabindra Jayanti, Driving Rural Renewal
Agartala, 9 May 2026 — Tripura University marked the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore on Saturday with a programme that placed rural reconstruction, education and cultural integration at its centre. Organized by the Department of Rural Management and Development (MRMD), the event combined ceremonial tributes, academic discussion and cultural performances on the university campus.
The commemorative proceedings opened with floral offerings at the statue of Gurudev near the Open Theatre, setting a solemn tone for the day. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shyamal Das, who presided over the programme, underlined the continuing relevance of Tagore’s rural-based knowledge systems and his educational and social philosophies for contemporary academia and development practice.
Registrar Prof. Samir Kumar Sil reflected on Tagore’s early life and emphasised the role of family encouragement in nurturing talent. He also urged that cultural integration be central to the university’s developmental vision, linking Tagore’s holistic approach to present institutional goals.
Delivering the keynote on “Rabindranath and Rural Reconstruction,” Prof. Indraneel Bhowmik analysed Tagore’s economic ideas and drew parallels between the Sriniketan experiments and modern models of sustainable development, arguing that Tagore’s rural initiatives offer practical lessons for current policy and community-led development.
Prof. Arobindo Mahato welcomed the gathering and highlighted Tagore’s long-standing influence on generations of scholars from Visva-Bharati, a view echoed by Dr. Rajesch Chatterjee during the programme. Their remarks reinforced the event’s emphasis on education, rural renewal and cultural continuity.
Cultural segments provided a lively complement to the academic discussions. Scholars from the Department of Music performed the Rabindra Sangeet “Hey Nuton,” while artists from the Neel Kantha Social and Cultural Organization presented a powerful Shruti Natok inspired by Tagore’s symbolic play “Raktakarobi,” adding theatrical depth to the observance.
The programme saw participation from faculty members, administrative staff and a large number of students, reflecting broad campus engagement. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Samrat Goswami, bringing a day of remembrance, reflection and cultural celebration to a close.
