Iran-US Tensions: Trump Sees Deal Possible as Israel Bombs Beirut

US President Donald Trump said he had “very good talks” with Tehran and that “it’s very possible we’ll make a deal,” as Iran said it is still reviewing a fresh US proposal to end the Gulf war and will relay its response to mediator Pakistan after it “finalises its views,” Iran’s ISNA news agency reported. Meanwhile, Israel struck an apartment in Beirut’s southern suburbs — the first attack on the Lebanese capital since a ceasefire took effect in mid-April.

Trump, writing on Truth Social, said the Strait of Hormuz would be “open to all, including Iran,” and warned that bombing would resume if Tehran did not agree. He wrote: “If Iran agrees, Epic Fury will be at an end, and highly effective blockade will allow Hormuz Strait to be open to all, including Iran.” In a separate post he added: “Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, ‌which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end.”

Sources cited in reports say Washington and Tehran are close to a one-page memorandum intended to halt the fighting while postponing more complex issues — including Iran’s nuclear programme — for later negotiation. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, quoted by ISNA, said Tehran is still reviewing the US offer and will communicate its decision to Pakistan, which hosted the only formal peace talks and has since acted as the main intermediary.

News of a possible deal sent shockwaves through global markets. Reports of rapprochement pushed benchmark Brent crude futures down by about 11% to roughly $98 a barrel. Global equity markets rose and bond yields fell as investors priced in the prospect of restored energy flows and reduced regional instability.

The strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs marks a notable breach of the mid-April ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon; details on casualties or damage were not provided in initial reports. Both the Pentagon and Tehran have been cited in earlier dispatches as closely monitoring developments, and Pakistan’s role as messenger underscores its ongoing involvement in attempts to de-escalate the conflict.

The Indian Express Global Desk said it will continue to provide real-time updates, geolocated footage as available, and reactions from officials in Washington and Tehran.
