The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will formally assume power in West Bengal with a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 9, the state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya confirmed, a date that coincides with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The announcement follows the party’s decisive electoral victory that ended the All India Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.
“The oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Minister of West Bengal will take place on May 9,” Bhattacharya said, confirming the timeline set after the election results.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier signalled the schedule at a final campaign rally in Barrackpore, saying he would return to Bengal after the results to attend the swearing-in. After the victory, Modi invoked Tagore’s ideals at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, saying the party aims to build a Bengal “where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.”
Senior officials from the Election Commission of India are expected to complete formal post-election procedures before Governor R. N. Ravi initiates the constitutional process for government formation and the oath-taking.
Holding the ceremony on Rabindra Jayanti-celebrated across Bengal as Pochishe Boishakh-adds cultural and emotional weight, given Tagore’s central place in the state’s literary and civic life. The timing is likely to carry symbolic resonance for many residents.
The BJP’s victory has been described by observers as a watershed moment in West Bengal politics, marking the end of decades-long dominance first by the Left Front and later by the Trinamool Congress.
