Met Gala 2026: Sculptural Capes to Diamond Sarees Inspire Fashion
The Met Gala 2026 red carpet transformed into a living museum of couture, culture and craftsmanship, and one surprise debut dominated early conversation: Indian billionaire Ananya Birla made her first-ever appearance at fashion’s biggest night, arriving in a sculptural all‑black couture piece that instantly became one of the evening’s most talked-about looks. The event, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under the theme “Fashion Is Art,” pushed designers toward storytelling, sculpture and heritage — a direction that Indian talent and patrons visibly embraced.
Birla wore a dramatic Robert Wun creation with a sculpted silhouette, pleated skirt and a face-covering detail that balanced theatricality with regal poise. Her arrival was noted not only for celebrity glamour but as a marker of Indian presence on the global luxury stage. Filmmaker Karan Johar also made his much-anticipated Met Gala debut in a custom Manish Malhotra ensemble inspired by Raja Ravi Varma; intricate zardozi embroidery, lotus motifs and a flowing cape translated painted iconography into wearable art.
One of the night’s most scrutinized looks belonged to billionaire heiress Isha Ambani, who wore a bespoke Gaurav Gupta couture piece studded with more than 1,800 carats of diamonds, emeralds, polki and kundan set into a jewellery-integrated blouse using heirloom stones from Nita Ambani’s collection. The blouse was paired with a handwoven gold-tissue saree inspired by Ajanta frescoes and a sculptural, resin-draped cape — a creation reportedly built over 1,200 hours by more than 50 artisans that blurred fashion, architecture and fine art.
Designer Manish Malhotra himself walked the carpet in a refined black bandhgala with an embroidered cape listing the names of the craftsmen behind it, a deliberate acknowledgement of the artisans who underpin haute couture. Socialite and philanthropist Sudha Reddy wore Malhotra’s “Tree of Life,” a piece drawing on Kalamkari traditions with symbolic palapitta and jammi chettu motifs alongside sun-and-moon imagery.
While Indian stars foregrounded heritage craftsmanship, Hollywood icons ensured global headlines: Beyoncé returned after a decade in a skeletal-inspired Olivier Rousteing gown accompanied by Jay‑Z and Blue Ivy, and Rihanna arrived fashionably late with A$AP Rocky in a jewel-encrusted couture look. Other high-profile arrivals included Venus Williams, Nicole Kidman, Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter, each turning the museum’s staircase into a theatrical runway.
Beyond celebrity spectacle, Met Gala 2026 reinforced the theme’s central claim: fashion as living art created by embroiderers, weavers, painters and designers. This year’s evening served as both a global showcase and a tribute to the often-unseen hands that transform textiles into cultural stories.
