Tragic East Delhi Fire Kills Nine, Toddler Among Victims
New Delhi, May 3: A fire ripped through a four-storey residential building in Vivek Vihar Phase I early Sunday, killing nine people from two families, including a toddler, officials said.
The blaze was reported at about 3:48 am and prompted an immediate response from police, the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) and disaster management teams. Teams reached the scene and launched a large-scale rescue operation.
Police said the fire engulfed flats on the second, third and fourth floors. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is under investigation.
The Delhi Fire Service reported that nine charred bodies were recovered from different parts of the building. “One body was recovered from the first floor, five from the second floor and three from the staircase which was found locked,” a DFS officer said.
Those killed on the second floor were identified as Arvind Jain (60), his wife Anita Jain (58), their son Nishant Jain (35), daughter-in-law Anchal Jain (33), and their grandchild Akash Jain. On the third floor, members of another family — Nitin Jain (50), his wife Shailey Jain (48), and their son Samyak Jain (25) — were also found dead.
A woman identified as Shikha Jain (45) died on the first floor, while her husband Naveen Jain (48) sustained injuries. A senior police officer said between 10 and 15 people were rescued during the operation; two individuals with minor injuries were taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
Twelve fire tenders were deployed to douse the flames, with support from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, traffic police and local police. The fire was brought under control after several hours. Authorities said further investigation is underway. (PTI)
