MP Govt Cracks Down on Bargi Cruise Negligence — Urgent Probe
Jabalpur, May 1 — The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday ordered strict disciplinary action after the cruise accident at Bargi Reservoir, dismissing several staff and suspending others as rescue operations continued and officials met grieving families. The move follows a review on the ground by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who visited Bargi Dam and offered condolences to survivors and relatives of the victims.
The government said cruise pilot Mahesh Patel, helper Chhotelal Gond and ticket counter in‑charge Brijendra (Front Office Assistant) were dismissed with immediate effect. Sunil Maravi, manager of Hotel Maikal Resort and Boat Club Bargi, has been suspended for negligence in duty, while Regional Manager Sanjay Malhotra has been attached to headquarters pending a departmental inquiry.
“No one found guilty will be spared under any circumstances,” Chief Minister Yadav said, underlining the state’s zero‑tolerance approach to lapses in safety and oversight. His visit to the site was described as emotional, with Yadav meeting survivors, consoling children and speaking with bereaved relatives.
Providing an update on rescue efforts, the Chief Minister said nine bodies have been recovered so far and 28 people rescued. Search operations to trace the missing are ongoing, involving teams from the State Disaster Response Force, the National Disaster Response Force and the Army in coordinated efforts at the reservoir.
Yadav also acknowledged the crucial help of local residents and workers associated with the Jal Jeevan Mission, who assisted official teams during the emergency. He said the incident had deeply shocked the state and that authorities would draw lessons to strengthen safety mechanisms at Bargi and similar tourist sites.
Announcing relief measures, the state government pledged financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to each family of the deceased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin. Investigations and departmental inquiries are expected to continue as rescue work and accountability measures proceed.
