Court Rejects Bail: Shyamkanu Mahanta in Zubeen Garg Death Case
A special fast-track court in Guwahati on April 30, 2026, rejected the bail application of Shyamkanu Mahanta, a prime accused in the high-profile death case of singer Zubeen Garg, ordering that he remain in judicial custody. The court announced its decision after reserving the order at the close of a two-day hearing on the petition.
The hearing followed standard procedure: both prosecution and defence presented arguments over two days before the court took time to consider the matter. With bail refused, Mahanta will continue to be detained while the criminal process moves forward.
The court’s decision came a day after it ordered the freezing of bank accounts linked to Siddharth Sharma, the late artist’s former manager and another key accused, as part of the ongoing investigation. The same order directed seizure of Mahavir Aqua, a packaged drinking water unit at Chhaygaon in the Soigaon Industrial Development Centre in Assam, which investigators say is reportedly owned by Sharma.
The case has drawn intense public attention since Zubeen Garg’s death. Garg died on September 19, 2025, while swimming during a yacht outing in Singapore, where he had travelled as a cultural brand ambassador for the North East India Festival; reports say he lost consciousness while swimming. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) subsequently probed the incident and filed charge-sheets against multiple individuals, including Mahanta and Sharma.
Legal proceedings are continuing in the fast-track court as investigators and prosecutors pursue the case and the court considers further evidence and hearings.
