Garbhanga-Rani Road (Jalukbari LAC) Turns Hazardous with Deep Potholes

Palasbari, April 28, 2026: The Garbhanga–Rani Gate connecting road in the Jalukbari Legislative Assembly constituency has become virtually unfit for vehicular traffic, residents say, after a 14-kilometre stretch was left riddled with pond-like potholes that have caused frequent accidents and injuries. Locals warn a major crash could occur at any time and say the damage is particularly worrying because the road serves as an important alternative route to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport at Borjhar.

Commuters report that the absence of proper drainage has led to severe waterlogging: rainwater collects in the numerous potholes with no outlet, and continuous traffic has turned weaker sections into deep craters. The situation has been aggravated by the closure of a bridge over the Pamohi canal, located about 200 metres from Garbhanga on the National Highway. The bridge, built nearly two decades ago by the Public Works Department (PWD), has been shut for nearly two months for repair work, forcing vehicles between Deepor Beel and Azara–Rani Gate to make a roughly four-kilometre detour via Ahomgaon, Garoghuli and Betkuchi along the NH.

Over the past few days several vehicles — including e‑rickshaws, three‑wheelers, motorcycles and bicycles — have met with accidents while negotiating water-filled potholes, leaving drivers and passengers injured, residents say. Environmental activist and general secretary of Deepor Beel Suraksha Mancha, Pramod Kalita, was injured when his scooter fell into a large pothole near an oil depot close to the Sri Sri Bhangara Gohain Temple on April 26, 2026. On April 23, 2026, office‑bearers of the Deushtal Rongali Bihu Committee had to physically push their four‑wheeler free after it got stuck in a pothole, and members of the Mikirpara Chakordo Rongali Bihu Committee reported a similar incident on April 26, 2026.

Representatives of local bodies including the Young Green Club, the Bhimashankar Temple Committee and other socio‑cultural organisations have expressed serious concern and warned that without immediate repairs a major accident is inevitable. Residents have urged the PWD to act promptly, noting the road was reconstructed in 2022–23 at an estimated cost of around Rs 10 crore but has deteriorated rapidly because proper drainage was not installed.

Locals are demanding that the PWD install adequate drainage on both sides of the road before any further reconstruction, and that temporary repairs be carried out immediately to prevent more injuries and restore safe access to the airport route and neighbouring areas.
