Manipur Police Seize Codeine Syrup, Intercept Fuel-Laden Vehicles
A 21-year-old man, identified by Manipur Police as Md. Warish of Hatta Golapati near the Public Hospital in Imphal East, was arrested on April 25 after officers recovered 151 bottles of “Codiva” cough syrup containing codeine phosphate during an operation targeting illegal narcotics and smuggling. The seizure and arrest form part of a continuing crackdown by police on controlled substances being diverted for abuse.
Police said the bottles were found in Warish’s possession when he was picked up from his locality on April 25. Codeine phosphate, a narcotic ingredient in some cough syrups, is regulated under drug control laws and is commonly misused as an intoxicant, officials noted. Further legal action and case registration are expected as investigations proceed.
On the same day, separate police teams intercepted seven vehicles believed to be carrying petroleum products toward the border town of Moreh. Officers recovered 48 plastic containers filled with suspected diesel or related fuel during routine checks and road patrols.
The intercepted convoy included several Maruti Eeco vans, a Tata Yodha and a Bolero pick-up. The drivers, reported to be residents of Chandel and Tengnoupal districts, were detained for questioning while authorities verified documents and traced the fuel’s origin.
Police suspect the consignment was intended for illegal cross-border trade, a recurring problem in the region driven by price differences and supply restrictions. Investigations are under way to determine whether the cough syrup and fuel cases are connected and to identify any wider networks involved.
Officials said intensified patrolling and vehicle checks will continue along vulnerable routes across the state to curb drug abuse and smuggling activities and to prevent further illegal consignments from crossing into border areas.
