Police Confirm: Guwahati Teacher Left Voluntarily — No Kidnap

Guwahati, April 25: Assam police on Saturday said there was no kidnapping in the case of missing Guwahati teacher Bhawana Sharma, who left home voluntarily because of mental distress and traveled on her own to Shillong, where she was traced safe in the Polo area early Saturday morning.

Addressing the media, West Guwahati Additional Superintendent of Police Maytri Deka said the investigation has found no evidence of abduction or criminal involvement. “Bhawana Sharma was not kidnapped. She left her home voluntarily, without any prior planning, due to mental anxiety,” Deka said.

Police provided a detailed timeline of Sharma’s movements: she stepped out of her residence at about 10:30 am and booked a Rapido to AEC Point. After paying the rider, she walked to an ATM in Jalukbari and withdrew Rs 7,000. She then took an ASTC bus to Paltan Bazar and hired a cab from there to Shillong.

In Shillong, Sharma booked a hotel and stayed overnight alone. Authorities said she switched off her mobile phone during this period because she was mentally exhausted. “She switched off her phone as she was mentally drained and upset. There was no threat to her safety,” Deka said.

Deka also dismissed any allegations against transport service providers, saying no driver was being blamed and that services such as Uber and Rapido were not involved in wrongdoing. She characterized the distress message Sharma sent to her mother before going missing as a result of emotional distress rather than an indication of external danger. “The message she sent was out of depression. There was no threat element involved,” the officer added.

While confirming Sharma is safe, police said the exact personal reasons behind her actions remain under inquiry. “We can disclose the reason only after the investigation is complete,” Deka said, noting that Assam Police and the Special Task Force continue to probe the matter. The disappearance had earlier sparked panic among family members and the public. Sharma, 27, is a resident of Tetelia and was formerly associated with Miles Bronson Residential School near Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
