PM Modi Inaugurates Indian High Commission in Brunei Amid Warm Welcome
Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), Sep 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Chancery of the Indian High Commission in Brunei on Tuesday. The opening ceremony, set at the Jalan Duta Diplomatic Enclave adjacent to the US Embassy, saw enthusiastic participation from the Indian diaspora, who welcomed the PM with chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’
The event was graced by National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar. This inauguration marks the starting point of PM Modi’s two-day visit to Brunei Darussalam—the first bilateral trip by an Indian PM to this Southeast Asian nation—on the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
PM Modi’s visit celebrates the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei. He was ceremoniously welcomed at Bandar Seri Begawan Airport by Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. “Landed in Brunei Darussalam. Looking forward to strong ties between our nations,” PM Modi posted on X.
The Prime Minister’s interactions also included vibrant meetings with the Indian community in Brunei. His bilateral discussions will cover potential collaborations in defense, trade, energy, space technology, and cultural exchange.
EAM S. Jaishankar had earlier met Brunei’s Foreign Minister Erywan Pehin Yusof, launching the logo for the 40 years of diplomatic ties. The leaders of the two nations have previously connected at various ASEAN summits, reinforcing their engagement.
Historically, Brunei’s government has been supportive of India’s ‘Look East’ and ‘Act East’ policies. According to MEA Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar, Brunei remains a critical partner in these strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation with ASEAN.
India’s population in Brunei stands at approximately 14,500, contributing significantly to various sectors such as oil, gas, and healthcare.
Following his Brunei visit, PM Modi will travel to Singapore to discuss enhanced cooperation in digital technology, skill development, and sustainability among other areas.
