Unbelievable LPG Cylinder Prices on April 18: Discover How Much Domestic and Commercial Gas Costs Today in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai!
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has had significant repercussions on global energy supplies, notably affecting the availability of cooking gas in India. In response, the Indian government has prioritized domestic supplies by restricting LPG deliveries to commercial establishments, including hotels and restaurants. This decision triggered a wave of panic among consumers, leading many to rush for LPG refills. At the peak last month, daily bookings skyrocketed to over 8.8 million, a drastic jump from the usual 4.5 million.
However, as of mid-April, a senior official from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported that the demand for cooking gas is gradually returning to pre-crisis levels, supported by an increase in domestic supplies. The onset of summer, which typically reduces heating needs, has also contributed to this stabilization.
In terms of pricing, domestic LPG rates saw a revised increase of ₹60 for a 14.2 kg cylinder in March, but prices have remained stable since then. In contrast, commercial LPG cylinders have faced two price hikes this year, totaling nearly ₹344, which has put additional strain on restaurants and businesses that depend on this fuel. Currently, prices for domestic and commercial LPG cylinders vary by region, with New Delhi’s 14.2 kg cylinder priced at ₹913 and the 19 kg commercial variant at ₹2,078.50.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, indicated a normalizing of daily bookings, currently hovering between 4.6 to 5 million. On April 16 alone, delivery reports showed that approximately 5 million refill cylinders were successfully dispatched. “We are seeing a return to normalcy,” Sharma noted, also mentioning that nearly 98% of LPG demand now comes from online bookings, facilitating efficient delivery operations.
Moreover, the government has taken steps to restore commercial LPG supply, now at around 70% of pre-crisis levels thanks to targeted strategies, including the distribution of smaller cylinders to migrant workers. Since March 23, over 1.64 million market-priced 5-kg LPG cylinders have been made available to those without a conventional cooking gas connection.
In an effort to optimize gas usage amidst the crisis, authorities are expediting the transition to piped natural gas (PNG). This initiative aims to enhance supply to households and vehicles using compressed natural gas while significantly boosting allocation to fertilizers and industrial sectors. City gas distributors are being encouraged to broaden PNG connections, effectively alleviating demand for LPG in commercial setups.
Despite the instability caused by global geopolitical tensions, India has managed to maintain a steady supply of both cooking gas and transport fuels. The focus remains on ensuring that household consumption and essential services are prioritized, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of these vital resources to the public and businesses alike.
