Bishnupur Violence: 21 Injured as Mob Torches Security Vehicles
Guwahati: Unrest erupted in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday after protesters intercepted a convoy of three private vehicles around 1:30 pm near Thinungei, leaving 21 people injured and five detained, police said. The district magistrate imposed movement restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita from 5 pm until further notice.
Police said the convoy comprised three private vehicles reportedly carrying armed security personnel dressed in civilian clothes. Locals, alarmed by rumours about the identity and purpose of those inside, blocked the vehicles’ movement and a large crowd quickly gathered.
According to police, the situation escalated when some members of the crowd became aggressive, attacked the vehicles and set two of them on fire. Two of the three vehicles were burned during the incident.
Residents alleged the occupants could be Kuki militants travelling in plain clothes, a claim that fueled the confrontation, police added. In response, additional police teams were dispatched to the scene to restore order, which led to clashes with protesters.
Authorities said at least 21 people sustained minor injuries during the clashes and five individuals were taken into custody. The imposed restrictions aim to limit public movement in the area while officials assess the situation.
